Formula now offers carbon neutral printed matter

Many international companies are familiar with calculating the CO2-emission caused by a specific product. The so called Carbon Footprint is available on items ranging from refrigerators to chocolate bars.

If you aim to go "carbon neutral", it is of course vital to know the CO2-values. To achieve this, Grafisk Arbejdsgiverforening (the Graphics Industry Employers' Association) has developed a climate calculation tool called the "GA Climate Calculator".

With this tool, the certified companies may calculate precisely how great the Carbon Footprint is for each single printed matter, regardless whether it involves 1,000 brochures or 500,000 pieces of stationary.

Taking the "green" lead
In Denmark, only six Graphics companies are certified to use the GA Climate Calculator. One of them is Formula A/S.

-We experience a continuous growing demand for climate information and product lifecycle documentation, says Managing Director Kai Tabor. Already, our production is EMAS-registered, FSC certified and licensed to produce printed matter equipped with the eco-label The Swan. An investment to be able to offer the calculation of carbon neutral printed matter was therefore a natural next step for us.

The calculations are performed in accordance with the internationally recognized Green House Gas Protocol standard, and the calculation tool takes into consideration the entire processing process - from the initial paper production, to the printing, finishing and transport to the end-user. By knowing the climate pollution for each printed matter, it is possible to offset those emissions by purchasing CO2-quotas.

Kai Tabor continues: Carbon neutral printed matter is our latest environmental commitment, however, we are prepared to go all the way to keep the "green lead". Among other things, we offer our customers Swan-labelled printed matter without any additional cost. Further, we minimize paper waste products by continuous investing in new printing technology, which both reduce paper and electricity consumption.

Another area of focus is using green energy when possible. At our production facility in Vivild, we utilize green heat, supplied by the local heating plant. Heating with woodchips provides us with a carbon neutral alternative.

In an industry known to have very little focus on the climate and on being environmentally friendly, a new agenda is seeing the light of day. One of the initiatives is now climate neutral printed matter produced as environmentally friendly as possible.
